Unleashing Potential: Elevating Rugby League Player Development through Elite-Focused Training Systems in 2025

Eels empowering tomorrow’s Rugby League champions through elite-focused training systems, we redefine Rugby League player development, unlocking their full potential and setting new standards of excellence.

‘Ignite and empower junior player development’ is the goal for Pakenham Eels Rugby League club in 2025. The expansion of coach and player education has been a long process, and ensures that all junior competition grades now follow a unified training structure. This strategy emphasizes fundamental skills, providing a consistent and solid foundation for young athletes across different levels of competition.
This initiative is also being established across age groups 6 to 12. Coaches are provided with a practical coaching toolkit to develop better young players, while allowing the players to enjoy both training and games. The concept of game-based play and scenario training also fosters a more creative style of Rugby League.
The club has aligned its coach development strategy in association with Melbourne Storm, with club coaches undertaking both the RISE program as well as the inaugural Melbourne Storm Coaching program delivered and facilitated by Melbourne Storm Director of Football, Frank Ponissi.
Both programs aim to connect club coaches and aspiring coaches with representative and NRL coaching staff as mentors. These programs are designed to enhance their coaching toolkit, fostering a positive and high-standard environment that promotes the development and growth of young players throughout their junior grades.
Competition Rugby League Grade Strategies
Our coaching philosophy is built on a unified ideology that both coaches and players embrace. By using the same terminology and adhering to the same high standards and skill development protocols, we ensure consistency throughout our training programs. This alignment creates a seamless environment where every player knows what is expected and can strive for excellence.
This approach not only helps in developing strong club players but also equips them with the tools they need to succeed at higher levels of Rugby League. Whether a player chooses to continue playing at the club level or pursue a professional career, they benefit from a solid foundation built on shared values and practices. By fostering a cohesive and supportive atmosphere, we prepare our players to excel, both on and off the field.

Skills and Conditioning
The clubs competition grade sessions focus around core skills (ball grip, catch and pass, playing the ball, tackle technique and marker defense). These form the basis of every session and are termed ‘not negotiable’ skill sets, meaning they must be done repetitively to build consistency.
Further progressions continue throughout the grades to focus on the understanding of time and space, good defensive movements, groundwork, attacking concepts and position specific development goals. One of the most important aspects that is pushed with all of our competition grades is resilience and effort, and this is mainly driven through these conditioning games.
Conditioning games for rugby league are designed to improve players’ fitness levels, agility, and game-specific skills while maintaining the fun and competitive spirit of the sport. These games incorporate various physical and tactical elements to ensure players are well-prepared for match conditions. For our younger age groups including our under 6’s to under 12’s these games, simply put, get the kids playing footy and being creative in an open format.
For players aged 15 years and over, the club has started implementing a strength and conditioning program. While not compulsory at this level, it is a good introduction for young players to begin working in this space, or for players who are already in pathways programs, or wanting to pursue representative rugby league, to get regular gym sessions at club level. This greatly assists game development as well as opening up good opportunities for representative selection.
We encourage all players and parents who are looking for a club that is focused on the fundamental development of players in a positive environment, to join the Pakenham Eels in 2025.
